Here’s Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore demoing Mango, the next release of Windows Phone 7. Looks interesting–especially if the version of IE does indeed feel more like IE9 for Windows than it does like Windows Phone 7′s IE, which is one of the operating system’s weak spots.

As Jared wrote recently, Microsoft is moving Windows Phone in a contrarian direction, focusing less on apps and more on building features like search and social stuff directly into the OS. It could work–and at least it’ll give Windows Phone its own distinct personality. But it does multiply the number of things that Microsoft needs to nail to make the OS appealing.

We knew good and well the next iteration of Windows would be generally available this fall, but now we’ve a date to circle in our datebooks: October 22nd. Yep, the fourth Thursday in the tenth month of this year will mark the first date in which you — the general consumer — can purchase Win7, which gives you plenty of time to figure out which of the 94 variants will suit you best. Have fun!

We’re still filing this away in the rumor folder for now, but we’ll be honest — this is totally believable. GigaOM has it on authority that a bona fide Skype for iPhone client will be launched as early as next week, and with CTIA kicking off on April 1st, we’d say the timing is just about ideal. Of course, we’ve already seen a variety of alternatives for bringing Skype and other VoIP apps to Apple’s darling, but by and large, they’ve been supremely unimpressive. There’s no word on pricing (we’re crossing our fingers for free) or any other tasty tidbits, but you can bet we’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for more.

iPhone OS 3.0 is coming. Set your clocks, mark your calendars. It’s going down March 17th. Apple’s calling this an “advance preview of what we’re building,” so we’re not expecting anything ready to go as of the 17th, but hopefully this will allow developers to start building toward future functionality (hey, how about some push notifications?), and presumably users won’t have too many months to wait after that for the real deal.

According to a report, Microsoft Corp. will be giving away free Windows 7 upgrades to people buying PCs with Windows Vista until as late as January 31 of next year. This is to encourage consumers to keep buying Windows Vista PCs, this year despite Windows 7 ‘s looming release.

The report, from the Malaysian blog TechARP.com, which has called similar details correctly in the past, is another clue that Microsoft plans to release Windows 7 before year’s end.

Citing purported confidential memos from Microsoft, TechARP.com had earlier reported that the Windows 7 Upgrade Program will begin July 1 of this year.

That would mean that any Vista PCs purchased between then and January 31, 2010 are eligible for free upgrades to Windows 7.

With Windows 7 Beta getting positive reviews, more rumors are emerging that Microsoft’s new operating system will be available before Christmas. But Microsoft is still refusing to admit that Windows 7 will be ready by the end of this year and insists on the January 2010 release date.

Windows 7 will be available at retail by Christmas this year — say both The Inquirer and CNet News, according to different sources. The Inquirer quotes Microsoft techie Mark Russinovich, who said in a webcast that Windows 7 “will be sent for manufacture three years after Vista did the same, which was in October 2006.”

On the other hand, CNet’s Ina Fried quotes “PC industry sources in Asia and the U.S” saying that “they have heard things are on track to launch by this year’s holiday shopping season.” CNet also says that Microsoft is prepping a program to offer Vista users an inexpensive alternative to updating to Windows 7.

On Wednesday Gridiron Software  released its much anticipated workflow tool, Flow, as a public beta for Mac users.

Targeted to creative professionals with large, expansive workflows, Flow was designed to help keep track of everything on your hard drive that is being used in a particular project. Flow will track the relationship of documents to your project regardless of where they are located, even if they are offline.

Flow has been in development for a couple of years, but company officials said the public beta is worth the wait.

“We wanted to make sure we had a stellar out of box experience,” Steve Forde, president of GridIron Software, told Macworld. “We really took our time and I’m really happy with the way it turned out.”

Forde said that as Flow developed in private testing some creative users have been using the tool as their desktop, constantly keeping track of what’s happening in their projects.

In addition to being a tracking tool, Flow will also show you what’s missing in a project visually. For example, if a font has been deleted from your system and it was being used in a project, Flow will let you know with alert. It will also highlight the portion of the project affected by the missing file.

“We designed this for creative pros, people that put food on their table by the doing creative work,” said Forde.

Flow also allows you to track the history of a document and revert to any version during the creative process. Of course, by tracking all of the documents associated with a project, you can also gather all of the files and package them to hand the project off.

Forde said one of the great things about Flow is time tracking. You can automatically record how much time is spent on a file or group of files, allowing you to better track whether you are making money on a project.

“Obviously you want to please the client, but if you’re not making any money at it, does it really make sense,” said Forde.

Flow works with a variety of creative software including Adobe Creative Suite, Apple Final Cut Studio and Microsoft Office.

Making use of a 103-inch Panasonic Plasma and a multitouch-capable overlay from U-Touch, British software developers UI Centric put together this awesome-looking table hockey demo that puts all other 103-inch, touch-based table games to shame. UI Centric created the game as a demo for the 2009 Integrated Systems Europe show in Amsterdam, which is for A/V and electronic systems integration, presumably for homes, blah blah blah. And I wish there was more to say on the matter, but aside from professing my love for virtual table hockey games, that’s about the extent of it.
